Article Abstract:

There is speculation that the decision by Unison General Secretary Rodney Bickerstaffe not to seek re-election when his term of office ends in 2000 is connected with criticism by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair of inflexible attitudes among public sector workers. Bickerstaffe himself has indicated that he feels that it is now an appropriate time to step down, as he feels that Unison is very well-established. It is believed that his chosen successor is current Assistant General Secretary Dave Prentis.
