Federal budget logjam stalls state Medicaid reforms

Article Abstract:

It is uncertain what direction state Medicaid reform efforts, most of which have been stalled by the federal budget stalemate, will eventually take. Doctors are sure to foot some of the bill for healthcare spending cuts, according to George Washington University researcher Kala Ladenheim, speaking at the American Medical Assn's 1996 state legislation meeting. Ladenheim explained that spending cuts would make less money available to meet still-existing healthcare needs and costs. Other speakers' comments are discussed.

States preparing to grapple with abortion restrictions

Article Abstract:

Planned Parenthood v. Casey is a victory for the pro-choice movement in that it affirms the right of a woman to receive an abortion prior to fetal viability. But the ruling's 'undue burden' clause places considerable responsibility on the shoulders of medical providers. Physicians are required to counsel women about risks and alternatives 24 hours before an abortion. They are also required to inform women about state benefits available to them if they choose not to abort.

Down but not out: single-payer doctors plot strategy

Article Abstract:

Support for a single-payer healthcare system has dissipated, but the Physicians for a National Health Program's members have apparently not lost their optimism or enthusiasm. The group's 1995 meeting drew a record number of attendees, about 100. They outlined strategies for the group's political initiatives, which include a Florida ballot measure and a petition to protest federal healthcare spending cuts.
