HIV prevention among sex workers in India

Article Abstract:

The Sonagachi Project was replicated to test the efficacy of a sustainable community-level HIV intervention among sex workers. Sex workers from 2 urban communities in northeastern India were selected and it was found that use of condom increased significantly in the community (39%) compared with the control community (11%) and the proportion of consistent condom users increased 25% in the intervention community compared with a 16% decrease in the control community.

Surveillance of HIV-1 subtypes among heterosexuals in England and Wales, 1997-2000

Article Abstract:

The molecular diversity and demographic characteristics of HIV-1-positive heterosexuals, attending sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinics, participating in a serosurvey, in England and Wales, between 1997 and 2000 were investigated. The results are presented on the genetic diversity of the heterosexual HIV epidemic in England and Wales.

National surveillance of HIV-1 subtypes for England and Wales: design, methods, and initial findings

Article Abstract:

About 27% of HIV infections in England and Wales are non-B subtypes and are spread almost entirely through heterosexual intercourse. This subtype may have been brought to the UK by immigrants from countries where non-B subtypes are common.
