The Scottish former employees of the US electronics subsidiary National Semiconductor (UK) Ltd (NS) sued the company by alleging that it negligently exposed them to carcinogenic chemicals called glycol ethers during their work. This chemical lead to breast, ovarian and uterine cancers among women.
