Health promotion in HIV: perspectives for practitioners

Article Abstract:

Good nutrition, exercise and stress reduction may help keep HIV patients healthy. Practitioners may try diet counseling to prevent weight loss and prescribing vitamin supplements to maintain good nutritional status in their HIV-positive patients. Exercise may improve immune function in HIV patients, and at the least it improves strength and cardiovascular fitness. Stress has a negative influence on immune function even in healthy adults, so stress-reduction techniques are particularly important for HIV patients.

Preconception care: a health promotion opportunity

Article Abstract:

Patients considering pregnancy may benefit from a medical consultation done before conception. This consultation can include an overall health evaluation, provide an opportunity to encourage healthy behavior, and educate potential parents about early fetal development. Parents' health before conception may influence their fetus' organ development occurring in the first few weeks following conception. A health assessment form and preconception health suggestions have been presented.

A new recommendation for physical activity as a means of health promotion

Article Abstract:

Updated guidelines for recommended exercise activity have been presented. These recommendations shift the emphasis from physical fitness to overall health. All capable adults should engage in some form of physical activity for at least 30 minutes daily. These activities can include household chores, gardening, or sporting activities. Primary care providers can be instrumental in identifying creative ways their patients can meet their health goals through exercise.
