High-stake bid to curb EPA

Article Abstract:

Efforts by the Republican-dominated Congress to reduce the EPA's funding and regulatory powers potentially threaten the public's health. Reduced funding would result in a slowdown in toxic-waste cleanups, a reduction in industrial facility inspections, and a delay in setting standards for industrial air pollution. Life expectancy during the 20th century in the US has gone from 45 years to 75 years, but this may now be in danger due to budgetary pressures.

Legacy of lead; AMA supports widespread screening for childhood exposure

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Assn reports that public health departments and physicians should routinely check all children under the age of six for the amount of lead in their bodies. The environmental risk has been lowered with the elimination of leaded gasoline and lead-soldered food cans, but the amount considered to be dangerous is lower than previously calculated. Lead house paint is still a danger with the number of older homes around.

System under siege

Article Abstract:

Medicine concentrates on diagnosis and treatment, rather than prevention of disease. Also, the public health system suffers because of lack of direction, according to a 1988 report by the Institute of Medicine. The number of uninsured rises, while budget cuts threaten the ability of government agencies to educate the public and fight the rise of infectious diseases.
