IMGs will face new test of clinical skills - and patience

Article Abstract:

The Educational Commission on Foreign Medical Graduates will begin testing international medical graduates (IMG) seeking to enter residency programs in the US. The commission will test IMGs for clinical and interpersonal skills at a test site in Philadelphia and at a cost of $1,200 to the graduate. Critics say the test discriminates against international students and that the test should be administered in more locations.

IMGs excluded from residency slots: internationally trained physicians say discrimination can be subtle - or blatant

Article Abstract:

American universities are discriminating against graduates of medical schools outside the US when selecting applicants for residency programs, as evidenced from the decline in the number of foreign graduates entering residency programs and from form letters sent to prospective residents. Attorneys for the American Medical Assn say such discrimination is illegal under federal statutes.

Match offers more residency slots - but not for IMGs

Article Abstract:

Medical residency programs in the US have not been downsized, even though there have been warnings of an oversupply of physicians. The National Resident Matching Program increased its slots in 1998 by 90 over 1997 to a total of 20,200, and US medical school graduates will fill 13,656. The number of international medical graduates fell by 3% in 1998 to 7,957.
