Intensive swimming: can it affect your patients' smiles?

Article Abstract:

Competitive swimmers may develop unusual brown stains on their teeth due to the effects of prolonged contact with chemically-treated pool water. Two female competitive swimmers, aged nine and 16, developed brown dental deposits within one year after they intensified their training regimens. Each girl swam laps at least five days a week for a total of 11 to 16 hours. Despite semiannual dental cleanings and thorough oral hygiene, brown stains developed on the outer surfaces of the girls' lower front teeth. The 16-year-old also developed deposits on the inner surface of her lower teeth. The unattractive discolorations were removed during professional dental cleaning, although one dentist had to exert more effort than that required to eliminate typical dental calculus. The discolorations reappeared in both swimmers within three months.
