Levels of vaginal secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor are decreased in women with lower reproductive tract infections

Article Abstract:

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) may increase the risk of HIV infection by reducing the amount of secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor in vaginal fluids. This was found in a study of 438 women, about half of whom had an STD. Secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor protects against HIV infection.

Decreased cervical proinflammatory cytokines permit subsequent upper genital tract infection during pregnancy

Article Abstract:

The authors have tested the hypothesis that suppression immune function in the lower genital tract is a risk factor for clinical chorioamnionitis. They have concluded that genital tract immune hyporesponsiveness permits clinical chorioamnionitis.
