Multiple approaches to multiple sclerosis

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the physiological aspects of multiple sclerosis, focusing on how the disease targets several regulatory mechanisms that prevent autoimmunity. Topics addressed include inflammation in the central nervous system, the physiological aspects of the thymus, and the role of glutamate receptors in slowing brain damage.

Multiple sclerosis: Trapped in deadly glue

Article Abstract:

The role of two forms of glial cells in the neuroinflammatory cascade of a mouse model of multiple sclerosis, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), is discussed. The perivascular dendrite cell-like microglia and parenchymal macrophage-like microglia serve as vital targets for therapeutic intervention.

Lipid microarrays identify key mediators of autoimmune brain inflammation

Article Abstract:

The various lipid-array analyses show that an increased T-cell and autoantibody reactivity to lipids is present in the autoimmune demyelinating disease multiple sclerosis, as the lipid microarrays are used to identify the key mediators on an autoimmune brain inflammation. The results show that the autoimmune responses to sulfatide and other lipids are present in individuals with multiple sclerosis and encephalomyelitis, which can affect the pathogenesis of autoimmune demyelination.
