Manic depression

Article Abstract:

People with manic depression can often successfully manage their illness, which gives them periods of elation and periods of depression, with the drug lithium. They then have to decide whether to disclose their illness to a prospective employer. An advantage of non-disclosure is that it allows the person to be judged according to their abilities and achievements. An advantage of disclosure is that an employer may be able to help by providing working conditions, including employee time management control and a quiet environment, which may prevent symptom recurrence.

Narcolepsy

Article Abstract:

Narcolepsy, a condition which causes sufferers to experience uncontrollable sleepiness, even in the middle of the day, is often not recognised by doctors. There are believed to be 25-50,000 people suffering from narcolepsy in the UK, but many remain undiagnosed. This is a cause for great concern, as early and correct diagnosis is vital if the condition is to be treated effectively. In some cases, narcolepsy can be associated with cataplexy, in which the sufferer experiences paralysis triggered by emotion.

The importance of maintaining high levels of safety on a building site highlighted by the revelation that up to 7 excavation construction workers die each year in the UK due to poor safety measures. One of the major difficulties in excavation work is the likelihood of trench collapse, which provides a mortality rate of 20% for those unlucky enough to be caught in an accident. Other problems are associated with vapour poisoning, explosions and falling from climbing equipment.
