No pancreatic endocrine stem cells?

Article Abstract:

A recent article that questions the existence of adult pancreatic endocrine stem cells, which, by definition, are not yet beta cells but are often suggested as a potential source of beta cells for patients with diabetes is discussed. The new study places increased emphasis on promoting the replication of adult beta cells and the differentiation of beta cells from embryonic stem cells at the expense of pursuing research into the use of adult stem cells for beta-cell replacement.

Granulocyte-macrophage progenitors as candidate leukemic stem cells in blast-crisis CML

Article Abstract:

Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis revealed higher levels of the progenitor pool (CD34 (super +1) Lin(super -1) cells) in bone marrow from patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia(CML) in the accelerated or blast phase than in normal bone marrow. Activation of beta-catenin in CML granulocyte-macrophage progenitors appears to enhance the self-renewal activity and leukemic potential of these cells.

Mechanisms of disease: Neural stem cells and the origin of gliomas

Article Abstract:

The prognosis of the malignant gliomas, a brain tumor continues to be depressing despite the progress in research on the molecular aspects of these tumors. One reason for the lack of clinical advances is ignorance of the cellular origin of this disease that delays the application of molecular analyses to treatment and impairs the ability to anticipate tumor behavior reliably.
