Nurses' detention powers and medical response to their use

Article Abstract:

The factors associated with use of Section 5(4) of the UK Mental Health Act (MHA) 1983 that allows nurses of the 'prescribed class' to legally prevent an informal inpatient who is receiving treatment for mental disorder from leaving the hospitals are studied. The study found that the doctor's opinion concurs closely with the nurse's decision to detain a mental patient on such grounds.

Article Abstract:

The functions of non-medical practitioners (NMP) in out-of-hours (OOH) care are studied by examining three OOH duty stations. Results concluded that NMPs help the healthcare providers to create more cost efficient services as well as career opportunities to other NMPs and nurses.
