Article Abstract:

The nursing profession in Egypt faces a wide range of problems, but there is the prospect of change. Problems include poorly educated nursing staff, a bad public image of nursing, and poor national health associated with extreme poverty levels. The opportunity for change lies with Minister of Health and Population Ismail Sallam. He views health reform as a foundation for development, and he perceives nursing to be a vital part of health care reform. Sallam envisages an important role for community nurses, and he considers women's health to be a central issue.

Russia - the new sick man of Europe?

Article Abstract:

Russian health workers are finding it very difficult to maintain high standards as the whole of the Russian health system is failing. Nurses in Russia are considered to be very lowly and in the present climate are often not paid by the authorities. Any money they receive comes directly from the patients. Doctors also receive little pay and are expected to carry out many of the tasks that are attributed to nurses in the west. Some British medical workers are attempting to provide support and information to their colleagues in Russia.
