Preventing sharps injuries

Article Abstract:

Preventing sharps injuries requires changes in workplace practices and the judicious use of safety devices. Most products must prove their effectiveness in the marketplace, where benefits and potential problems will be realized. Personal protective devices are most cost-effective if they are chosen to reduce injuries with a high risk of infectious disease transmission. Modification of risky work practices remains an important component of an injury prevention program.

An ergonomics program for the health care setting

Article Abstract:

All nurse executives should be familiar with the physical stresses of nursing and should formulate an ergonomics plan to deal with them. Back injuries are common among nurses and risk factors include reaching, bending, twisting, lifting and stooping. All workstations and tasks should be analyzed to identify these risk factors. Time-motion studies can reveal which tasks can be changed to eliminate hazardous motions.
