Refusal of care: Patients' well-being and physicians' ethical obligations: "But Doctor, I want to go home"

Article Abstract:

A case of a hospitalized elderly woman is presented, wherein the bedbound patient, lacking social support and financial resources to manage safely, insists on returning home on discharge, and the medical team requests an ethical consultation on the matter. Issues related to this ethical problem are discussed, including a review of the patient's role in decision-making, patients' rights as compared to their well-being, consideration of physician values, and responding to patients' refusal of care.
