Repairing fractured porcelain: how surface preparation affects shear force resistance

Article Abstract:

Small cracks in porcelain dental crowns and bridgework with underlying metal structures may be repaired with resin compounds and bonding systems that bind to the porcelain exterior. Researchers made and tested repairs on 14 groups of 10 porcelain rods. The repair was most stable if the surface of the porcelain glaze was broken with hydrofluoric acid etching or sandblasting. Treatment of the porcelain with a silane compound before repair led to a stronger bond when the rod was exposed to physical stress and temperature fluctuations, which weaken such repairs. Of the various bonding systems tested, Ultradent had the greatest bond strength.

Repairing fractured porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge pontics

Article Abstract:

Dentists describe a technique for repairing a fractured dental bridge without actually removing it. This technique costs just one-fourth what it would cost to make and install a new bridge. It also spares the patient's existing teeth and gums from the trauma of removing a damaged bridge and installing a new one.
