Smokeless tobacco use: how it affects the performance of major league baseball players

Article Abstract:

Smokeless tobacco (ST) does not appear to enhance major league baseball players' athletic performance. Researchers surveyed 290 professional baseball players about ST use, conducted oral examinations, and reviewed players' performance records for the 1988 season. ST use was unrelated to selection by a major league team or participation in regular season games. Batting, base running, fielding, and pitching performance were similar among ST users and nonusers who played during the regular season. ST-using players had an increased rate of oral leukoplakia, gum recession, and loss of tooth structure compared to non-ST-using players. Significantly more pitchers used ST than fielders. Compared to ST users, nonusing pitchers pitched more innings and nonusing fielders played more games and had more at-bats.
