Struggle over controlled drug prescribing rights

Article Abstract:

The government is considering plans to give the power to prescribe all controlled drugs to independent nurse prescribers by the end of 2007r as most of the formulary apart from some controlled drugs has already been opened to nurse prescribers in May, 2007. The department of Health and nursing organization should convince the Home Office that controlled drugs will fall into wrong hands, and doctors need to be convinced that nurse prescribing is safe and that it is not an intrusion on their turf.

Should staff be rewarded for being nice to patients?

Article Abstract:

The King's College Hospital NHS Trust in London introduced the FISH scheme to reward staff that was seen being particularly nice or helpful to patients. The technique was found to be highly successful, with a reduction in the number of complaints from patients on elderly care ward, however, some nurses have questioned why such a scheme was necessary when 'being nice' should be an integral part of nursing care.
