Surgical vs nonoperative treatment for lumber disk herniation: The Spine Patient Outcome Research Trial (SPORT): A randomized trial

A Spine Patient Outcome Research Trial, a randomized trial enrolling 501 surgical candidates with imaging-confirmed lumber intervertebral disk herniation is conducted to assess the efficiency of surgical vs. nonoperative treatment for lumber intervertebral disk herniation. Patients in both the surgery and the nonoperative treatment groups improved substantially over a 2-year period.
