Taking a humanistic approach to assessment

Article Abstract:

The nursing profession perceives teaching as the assimilation of a body of knowledge, and assessment as an authoritarian appraisal of the extent to which assimilation has taken place. The profession has become obsessed with quantifiable assessments of competence, but there are differences, for example, between the measurement of competence in a practical task and assessment of competence in the activities undertaken by a psychiatric nurse. Nursing involves more than the ability to perform psychomotor tasks. The profession should concentrate on the process of assessment rather than the outcomes.

Song sung blue

Article Abstract:

A music workshop, for people suffering from mental illness, was the winner of the Lilly Schizophrenia Reintegration Award which included 3,000 pounds sterling. The workshop was set up for an eight week trial period which was so successful the participants wanted to continue on a regular basis. The group included a variety of people suffering from mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia. The main idea behind the project was to help the participants to use music to express their feelings and to utilize the music to help them relax and have fun. Some of the instruments were donated by the public.

Just typical: the treatment of psychosis in the UK

Article Abstract:
