The cost-effectiveness of treating women with a cervical vaginal smear diagnosis of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance

Article Abstract:

A repeat Pap smear one year later is the most cost-effective method of managing women who have Pap smears of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. This means that the cervical cells are abnormal but not cancerous. Many physicians believe such women should receive aggressive procedures such as biopsies. But this would be very expensive because over 2 million American women fall into this category each year. An analysis of eight different follow-up strategies found that the most cost-effective strategy is to repeat the Pap smear a year later with biopsies at that time if it has progressed to a precancerous condition.

Prediction of cervical histologic results using an abbreviated Reid Colposcopic Index during ALTS

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the accuracy of an abbreviated Reid Colposcopic Index (RCI) to detect cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 2 and CIN 3 during the National Cancer Institute (NCI) ASCUS LSIL Triage Study (ALTS). The conclusion showed that Colposcopists using the RCI in the ALTS trial failed to detect CIN 2/3 at the levels expected.

Computerized planimetry versus clinical assessment for the measurement of cervical ectopia

Article Abstract:

Computerized planimetry appears to be effective in detecting cervical ectopia. Cervical ectopia is a condition in which a single layer of columnar epithelium is present in the cervix. Researchers believe this condition increases a woman's risk of sexually transmitted infections.
