The need for a clear policy on glove use

Article Abstract:

UK nursing associations are concerned about the increased use of vinyl or latex surgical gloves by nurses and the possible increase in cross contamination which may occur through their over use. Evidence suggests some nurses are replacing efficient hand washing for gloves, which increases the chances of latex allergies and contamination. A study of 7,500 staff working for the National Health Service found 40% wore gloves for up to 4 hours each day, indicating a lack of appropriate glove policy. Nursing associations would like to see glove policies established to protect patients and nurses.

Mid-Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust has established an infection control link nurse system, with a nominated nurse taking responsibility for monitoring procedures and informing or educating other staff. The infection control nurse liaises with the infection control team about any problems. They also have to be able to insist on correct procedures being followed, even with staff members of a higher grade. Weekly surveillance forms are filled in to monitor the incidence of infection. Infection control covers eight main areas, including decontamination of equipment and hand hygiene.
