The world is your oyster

Article Abstract:

Nurses who want to work abroad need to consider why they want to go, where they will go, and find out about the country they decide upon. They need to be aware of different cultures, be diplomatic and realise that other countries will not treat nursing staff in the same way that Britain does. Many nurses choose Australia because the language is the same, and because they do not need to sit any exams. Germany is very keen on experienced nurses and other countries need specialist skills such as paediatric or neonatal experience.

Poor reception

Article Abstract:

Proposals by the General Medical Services Committee (GMSC) of the British Medical Association (BMA) have met with opposition from nurses, firstly over lack of consultation and secondly over how the proposals could affect them. Nurses are concerned over a plan for nursing services to be organized by physicians, and based only round practices. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has voiced various criticisms including the lack of understanding of community nurses' career structure which is implied in the proposals.

Moribund or mutating?

Article Abstract:

The National Health Service (NHS) is undergoing many changes, and this has led some observers to speculate about whether it will survive at all. They fear that the principles on which the NHS was founded are being eroded, with more people having to pay and fewer receiving the nursing care they require. In contrast, the government has created a vision of a flexible, more user-friendly health service.
