Tourette's syndrome: a model neuropsychiatric disorder

Article Abstract:

Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a classic neuropsychiatric disorder that is shaped by genetic and environmental factors. TS is usually diagnosed in children and often continues throughout the lifespan. Features of the condition include repetitive motor and vocal tics that are often compounded by behavioral manifestations such as obsessive-compulsive symptoms or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. TS and related tic disorders are inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. Environmental conditions during fetal development may affect the course of TS. Research on twins with TS reveals that genetic susceptibility to the condition can be exacerbated by adverse environmental factors. Neuroimaging studies reveal subtle abnormalities in the basal ganglia of the brain, which is the likely site of the TS disease process. TS treatment may include drug therapy, family counseling, or psychotherapy to treat the most disabling symptoms of the disease.

Generalized anxiety disorder

Article Abstract:

Generalized anxiety disorder risk factors include a family history of the condition, an increase in stress, and a history of physical or emotional trauma. In patients who present with anxiety as a symptom, medical causes, such as hyper thyroidism, require consideration, as do common coexisting illnesses such as major depression, panic disorder, and substance abuse.

Anxiety at the frontier of molecular medicine

Article Abstract:

Research on the gamma-aminobutyric (GABA) receptor will help scientists develop better anti-anxiety drugs. Many anti-anxiety drugs such as benzodiazepines act upon this receptor.
