Traditional medicine and WHO

Article Abstract:

WHO supports member countries' efforts to determine the safety and effectiveness of traditional medicines in common use. Five major areas of concern in regard to traditional medicine and modern health care are discussed: national policy, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and training and research.

Building on local health culture

Article Abstract:

Traditional healers, such as herbalists and shamans, can be very effective 'community health workers' (CHWs) with the appropriate training. Because they are part of the communities they serve, CHWs are in the best position to win community participation and cooperation.

Culture and depression

Article Abstract:

Effective treatments exist for depression, which is a major health problem in developing countries, but the condition is usually not treated due to misconceptions about depression and limited access to treatment.
