Turning up the heat in the fat cell

Article Abstract:

A study done to demonstrate that mouse adipocytes lacking the inositol-phosphatase Pten have a propensity to burn out calories through heat formation, as opposed to storing them as triglycerides and promoting obesity is reported. The study highlights a seemingly unique vantage point from which Pten coordinates the balance between energy intake and disposal within the adipocyte, thus enabling an insulin-sensitive adipocyte to successfully withstand the onslaught of adverse environmental cues, without resulting in obesity.

You are what you secrete

Article Abstract:

Secreted proteins, referred to as adipokines, plays an important role in a variety of complex processes like fat metabolism, feeding behavior, hemostasis, vascular tone, energy balance and insulin sensitivity. Obesity and insulin resistance that is considered as a complex relationship that gives rise to a range of metabolic disorders can be overcome by yielding new therapies to treat some of these conditions.

Staying in SHIP shape

Article Abstract:

The studies of phosphoinositide phosphate SHIP2 show that the new SHIP2 knockout mouse downplay a direct role for the protein in glucose homeostasis but also implicates as an important player in the regulation of energy disposition. The SHIP2 knockout mouse had reduced levels of leptin, suggesting that they had increased sensitivity to the hormone.
