Use of total lymphocyte count and hemoglobin concentration for monitoring progression of HIV infection

Article Abstract:

A method developed to simulate the prospective monitoring of HIV-infected individuals and to identify rapid declines in total lymphocyte count (TLC) or hemoglobin is presented to maximize the sensitivity and specificity for identifying individuals who develop AIDS. In the multicenter AIDS cohort study (MACS) rapid declines in TLC or hemoglobin concentration indicated an increased likelihood of progression of HIV infection to AIDS.

Prognosis of AIDS-related systemic non-Hodgkin lymphoma treated with chemotherapy and highly active antiretroviral therapy depends exclusively on tumor-related factors

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to assess complete remission (CR) and survival in patients with systemic AIDS-related non-Hodgkin lymphoma (ARL) receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). It is concluded that CR was associated exclusively with tumor-related factors in patients with ARL treated with HAART and the CR rate was poorer in patients with BL and TC subtypes and was inversely correlated with IPI score.

Risk of non-AIDS-related mortality may exceed risk of AIDS-related mortality among individuals enrolling into care with CD[4.sup.plus] counts greater than 200 cells/m[m.sub.3

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to quantify cause-specific mortality risk attributable to non-AIDS-related and AIDS-related causes before and after the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). HAART was found to reduce mortality rates among HIV-infected individuals but further efforts to reduce mortality require increased attention to conditions that are not traditionally considered to be HIV related.
