Dragons at the gate: how one man's view of Chinese gardens challenged English orthodoxy

Article Abstract:

The Chinese style of gardening was hotly debated in 18th century England between landscaper Capability Brown and architect William Chambers. Brown believed in a simple style with no flowers or structures. Chambers believed that the true Chinese style needed interesting structures and surprises.

Hurrah for Hortus!

Article Abstract:

Wheeler, an English gardener, found no suitable literature on gardening so he began his own eclectic quarterly, Hortus. After the first issue, an article on the magazine generated 900 subscribers so he quit his job and is a full time editor. The content and philosophy of Hortus is described.

Well-weathered wisdom

Article Abstract:

English gardeners worry about the weather much more than American gardeners because the English weather is harder to predict. Weather forecasts are so unreliable, the English depend on old weather proverbs. Some of those proverbs and their reliability are presented.
