Case study: the AICPA's selection of a retirement plan provider

Article Abstract:

A case study of the selection of a retirement plan provider by the AICPA is presented. The group's decision process, which illustrates the usefulness of research in identifying the retirement plan needs of a company and in choosing the most appropriate provider, is described. The AICPA, after nine months of searching, finally chose a firm that demonstrated retail experience, customization, service, flexibility and an established track record in investment performance.

Packaging is nice, but the 'plan' should remain part of the 401(k)

Article Abstract:

Employers are urged to carefully investigate packaged 401(k) plans to find out their true value. Such off-the-shelf plans frequently do not have the features required by a company and the services that are needed. Employers thus need to analyze each feature of the overall program, choose a recordkeeper that can function within the plan's framework, measure the performance of investments and communicate with plan participants.
