Downsizing goes east? Employment re-structuring in post-socialist Poland

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted with middle and senior managers of four companies in Poland to examine how they handled redundancies caused by employment re-structuring policies. The changes in Poland are the result of market forces and the deregulation of wages and prices. The Polish managers generally took a more humane approach than western managers and were reluctant to lay off large numbers, preferring to rely on natural wastage or reduction of hours. Polish managers should try to resist harsher western downsizing methods because they have not been proven to be effective.
