Industrial conflict: themes and issues in recent research

Article Abstract:

Research into industrial conflict was approached from a variety of angles during the 1980s, a period during which the number of strikes fell sharply suggesting a change in the pattern of conflict as employers sought to foster a sense of commitment amongst their employees. The political economy approach has been applied to some research while other research has focused on strike patterns, labour regulation, Thatcherism's impact on industrial conflict in the UK, and the relationship between human resource management and conflict. Suggestions for further avenues of research are included.

The evolution of industrial relations in UK nationalized industries

Article Abstract:

It is particularly appropriate to consider the development of industrial relations in nationalized industries in the UK as the era of nationalization which began immediately after the Second World War comes to an end. The most significant question is whether state ownership fosters distinctive approaches to industrial relations. Research indicates that state ownership does have some impact on industrial relations. The distinct nature of industrial relations in nationalized industries is mainly found in how political influence is used to determine business strategy.

Industrial relations in hotels and catering: neglect and paradox?

Article Abstract:

The service sector accounts for more than 70% of employment in the UK, but there has been very little research into industrial relations in the service industries. Recent research has looked specifically at industrial relations in hotels and catering. It was found that there are high levels of individualism in these sectors, which can in turn lead to problems with industrial relations. Service sectors should be given more attention if the quality of knowledge about industrial relations as a whole in the UK is to be improved.
