Labor costs for manufacturing are still higher in western Germany than in other countries, although the gap is becoming more narrow. Currency fluctuations have been a major influence in these costs.

German labor costs are still the highest in the industrialized nations of the world. Average German labor costs are 39% more than the average labor costs of other nations.
