Organizing low-wage immigrants: the workplace project; interview with Jennifer Gordon

Article Abstract:

This article provides an interview with Jennifer Gordon, the founder of the Workplace Project, a labor-based servicing center established in 1992 and based in Long Island. Issues include efforts to develop and expand low-wage immigrant workers' economic, political and social power; the organization of immigrant workers to help advance their own interests and bring them into leadership positions; and Gordon's worker education model based on Paolo Freire's ideas of popular education emphasizing leadership and involvement.

Organizing high-tech permatemps in the Pacific Northwest: interview with Barbara Judd

Article Abstract:

An interview with Barbara Judd, a former temporary employee at Microsoft who left the company to form a union to defend the rights of high tech works, is given. Issues discussed include the treatment of temporary employees in the high technology industry in Washington state, the lack of real wage increases for these employees and the need for unionization among this underrepresented work-force.

Skilled labor is discussed in relation to the labor movement. Issues include better jobs, lean production practices, areas to organize, and economic power for the labor movement. Other topics include the UAW Tool and Die strike, the 1997 strike at United Parcel Service, and training for skilled work.
