Rough passage for construction rules

Article Abstract:

The European Parliament has given a second reading to the European Community draft legislation on construction site health and safety but many members were unhappy that Ministers of the member states were resisting many of the first reading changes. One area of disagreement concerns exemptions given in the case of small short term projects, those involving under 20 workers and shorter than 30 days. At the meeting in Strasbourg, France in May 1992 members demanded again that workers must have the right to leave their workplace if they believe their health or safety are at risk.

COSHH-slow progress towards compliance

Article Abstract:

A survey on the COSHH regulations in Aberdeen showed that most of the respondents were aware of the legislation. Companies answered questionnaires, and some were selected for a later audit. COSHH was put above other environmental regulations by 75% of respondents. Some firms claimed to have carried out assessments where audits revealed they had not done so. This led to suggestions that compliance could be higher, and that looking at the risks initially was where action was needed.
