Scaling the recruitment wall

Article Abstract:

A panel discussion of employee recruitment and retention sponsored by Personnel Journal and the law firm of Tillinghast, Collins and Graham is presented. The participants included Howard-Sloan-Koller Group VP and Dir of Recruiting of Editorial/Creative Services Karen Danziger; The Washington Post Dir of Personnel Jacqui Marshall; and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center Personnel Div Chief Irwin J. Schauer. Schauer cited workforce diversity in the 1990s as a major issue in recruiting efforts at NASA. Marshall stated that managing diversity was simply a necessity for the viability of the Post. Danziger complained that companies often requested minorities from recruiters despite a lack of qualifications, and she felt that filling such a request was inappropriate.

Safety: seeing is believing

Article Abstract:

Results of a safety study at a lumber mill in Washington State demonstrate the educational value of employees actually seeing evidence of exposure to a dangerous chemical. The evidence was provided by mixing a harmless fluorescent dye in the wood preservative tetrachlorophenol. Workers could test their possible exposure by holding their hands under a bank of ultraviolet lights near the worksite. The glow from contaminated hands amazed workers, who did not realize their laxity in safety precautions. Workers were motivated by the instant feedback from the visual test to be more careful and follow safety procedures. the dye technique cna be used to motivate employees or evaluate safety equipment.
