Union presence, union service and membership participation

Article Abstract:

A study on the presence of unions and membership of unions indicates that membership of both unions at places of work and other unions is affected by the services offered by the unions and by their presence. The relationship between the finances of unions and their design is of interest. Unions can affect how many members are active by altering their services and their presence. Research indicates that when unions invest heavily in recruiting new members they reap long term rewards.

Financial management and financial performance in British trade unions

Article Abstract:

Recent research has sought to establish links between changes in financial management and changes in financial performance of UK trade unions by using survey information. It has been found that new financial management practices give rise to increases in the cost base as trade union organisations expand their administrative functions. It is clear that union financial performance has deteriorated over the last few years, despite the ongoing reform of financial management systems.

Strategy versus context: some comments on Morishima

Article Abstract:

A key element to the debate about developments in human resource management (HRM) policies has been added by professor Motohiro Morishima, who states that it is unwise to assume that HRM policies can be designed and implemented by individual concerns. His research has provided important information about HRM practices in Japanese companies, and highlights the inertial forces which may lead to variance. However, it does not go as far as to analyse change itself.
