As America changes, so does the insurance workforce

Article Abstract:

Insurance companies are making concerted efforts to hire more women and minorities, yet few minorities ever advance to senior-level positions. The number of minorities in the insurance industry continues to increase, despite a decline in total industry employment. However, only 9% of insurance companies have African-Americans in managerial positions, according to a survey conducted by the Independent Insurance Agents of America. Many minorities are choosing to establish their own insurance agencies to circumvent the perceived 'glass ceiling.'

Dividing the information highway

Article Abstract:

Many insurance agents particularly exclusive agent representatives of some insurance firms are outraged by the decision of these carriers to place select agents on the company's World Wide Web page. The head of the Coalition of Exclusive Agents Assns. opined that insurers discriminate and cause dissatisfaction within their sales force when the companies place only what they consider their best agents on the corporate Web Page. Some agents consider this move as one designed to enforce production goals and operations requirements.
