Breaking barriers to serving urban markets

Article Abstract:

Insurance companies are venturing into urban markets in response to the growing demand for insurance among urban residents. One company that is striving hard to penetrate the urban market is Bloomington, IL-based State Farm Automobile Insurance Co. To attract urban residents to avail of its services, State Farm is establishing agent and full-service offices in previously unserved areas, helping nonprofit organizations and community groups revitalize urban neighborhoods and encouraging its agents to actively participate in community improvement projects.

A 1994 study identifies lack of minority representation as one of the main problems facing the insurance industry.
