Agents' input can improve product design process; in light of market conduct issues and changing consumer needs, life insurance sales would be easier if producers help to design policies

Article Abstract:

Agents in the field have a meaningful part to play in insurance product and regulation development, and they must be given that input to ensure a product that will serve its intended market and be profitable, and regulations that do not impact the industry adversely. Producers in the field have a unique understanding of customer needs and they can observe market forces that headquarters staff cannot. One group of producers was recently able to influence the National Assn of Insurance Commissioners into adopting a model regulation on insurance illustration that was less problematic to the industry than the one that was originally developed.
