Solid bottom line masks shifting fundamentals

Article Abstract:

Overall performance in the health and life insurance segments was lackluster in 1996, despite sound earnings expectations for the year. Rising litigation costs, continued low levels of distribution and expenses associated with restructuring programs contributed to the industry's weak performance. Market conditions are expected to pose challenges for medical insurers in 1997 and life insurance sales are expected to be mixed for the year.

The challenge beyond consolidation

Article Abstract:

Life insurance companies are consolidating in order to compete more effectively with mutual fund companies, banks and other financial institutions. Insurers need to achieve a critical mass and to make insurance just one part of a set of integrated financial services. However, insurers need to invest in technology to create a more efficient distribution system.
