Tracking the disability market
Article Abstract:
Income from noncancellable disability premiums show some improvement, however minimal. Among the companies which enjoyed high premiums compared to previous year figures are IL-based Trustmark Life, American Family Life, Northwestern Mutual Life and First UNUM Life. Nebraska-based Woodmen Accident and Life posted the highest boost in income. Insurance professionals continue to be attracted to noncancellable disability despite its largely unpredictable nature because of the guaranteed fixed premium and benefits.

States take aggressive stance on compliance with new healthcare laws and regulations
Article Abstract:
Health insurers are advised to abide with the regulations stated in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 which is also known as the Kennedy-Kassebaum Bill. States have taken a proactive stance in implementing the regulations by adding to or amending at least 15,000 sections in HIPAA. The move was deemed necessary because several healthcare providers were alleged to have circumvented regulatory requirements.

Preparing a strong defense against liability risk
Article Abstract:
An increase in subjective disability benefit claims have been filed during the 1990s. Claims for chronic fatigue disorder have increased but these claims present evaluation difficulties pertaining to validity and disability length. Buy-backs of noncancelable disability policies by insurance companies have also been viewed in a disparaging manner by juries. Techniques are offered for policy surrenders.
