Ukraine's balancing act

Article Abstract:

Ukraine has pursued a policy of neutrality to contain opposing pressures from its European and Russian neighbors. The urge to assert its European identity has been adroitly balanced with mounting Russian pressure to integrate into the Russian Federation. However, factors such as the NATO enlargement proposal and an aggressive Russian foreign policy could endanger Ukraine's survival as an independent state. Besides inclusion in NATO's Partnership For Peace program, the West needs to be more supportive of Ukraine's efforts at peaceful political and economic transition.

The EU needs to rethink its Cyprus policy

Article Abstract:

It is unlikely that reintegration would be the best approach to solving the Cyprus problem. Indeed, seeking reintegration and putting more pressure on Turkey to reach such an agreement would bring the danger of a permanent division of Cyprus. There seems to be a trend away from the reintegration of Cyprus being achievable, even though this is undoubtedly the most favourable solution. The Cyprus problem must be seen within the wider context of Turkey's domestic development and that country's connections with the West, particularly Europe.

Ukraine and the West

Article Abstract:

Ukraine's integration into the European Union and NATO would significantly change the political map of Europe, can have a catalytic effect on the region, reinforcing the Western orientation of Georgia and Moldova and have an impact on the prospects for reform in Russia. A coalition of reformist forces led by President Victor Yushchenko could give Ukraine's push for Western integration a new impetus but a victory of the forces allied with the former prime minister can be a severe set back for the same.
