New life; prospects brighten for LSC reauthorization

Article Abstract:

The Legal Services Corp (LSC) enjoys good prospects for reauthorization as legislation makes its way through the House and Senate in mid-1992. The ABA has supported the LSC since its inception in 1974 and considers reauthorization to be crucial for national efforts to ensure access to the courts for the poor. ABA figures show that the $350 million appropriation received by the LSC for fiscal 1992 was 35% below its 1981 appropriation when inflation is factored in. $545 million would return the LSC to its 1981 funding level.

LSC down but not out; with reauthorizations stalling, ABA carries on fight for legal services

Article Abstract:

The Legal Services Corp (LSC) got through fiscal 1996 but its budget was cut by one-third and Congress imposed restrictions on the kinds of clients and cases local programs can take on. Changes introduced by the LSC Board of Directors in response to congressional mandates and suggestions included a competitive grant process and a per capital basis for grants for basic field services. The ABA, through its Campaign for Legal Services, is urging the appropriation of enough money to allow the LSC to function through fiscal 1997.
