Politics and cynicism dominate UN biotech deliberations

Article Abstract:

A US-led group composed of Australia, Canada. Argentina, Chile and Uruguay was able to prevent the passage of a United Nation's biosafety protocol that would have regulated the testing and trade of gene-spliced seeds, organisms and other products. The proposed regulation, which was supported by over 130 nations, has been debunked as anti-innovative, anti-competitive and unscientific. However, a look at existing US regulations suggests that such a move by the US is only because the proposal threatens its major agribusinesses.

Encyclopedic knowledge about financial gerontology

Article Abstract:

The field of financial gerontology combines study of mature and elderly populations with the study of finances and economic security. The term was coined in 1990, and study of the subject was begun in response to a void. Various other forms of gerontology existed, such as social gerontology, but no economic or financial gerontology existed. While there are no professional or academic journals devoted to the subject yet, Lois A. Vitt and Jurg K. Siegenthaler released the "Encyclopedia of Financial Gerontology" in 1996.

Financial issues

Article Abstract:

A summit of member states in 1969 set a goal of achieving European economic and monetary union (EMU) by 1980, but the project foundered. It was revived in 1979 when the European monetary system (EMS) was created, involving a European currency unit (ecu) and an exchange rate mechanism (ERM). The 1991 Maastricht treaty was a renewed attempt to build EMU on the EMS foundation. Recent actions include confirmation that the EMU is to be launched on January 01 1999, with 11 participating countries initially.
