Staged pay rises for most review body groups

Article Abstract:

UK review body pay awards will be phased in during 1996, utilizing a two-stage process to help lower the overall cost of the wage increases. Teachers, military personnel, doctors, dentists, and senior public officials and civil servants will receive the phased increases, but the rises for nurses, midwives, and similar medicine-allied professions will not be staged. Although many public sector workers will receive increases outstripping inflation, the staged phased-in allows the increases to be spread across two accounting years, since 1% of the increases will be held until Dec.

Four in a row at 3.5%

Article Abstract:

UK pay raises averaged 3.5% in Feb 1996, the fourth consecutive month at that level. In an election year, economic forecasters predict lower interest rates, a robust economy, and low inflation, all of which could affect future pay increases. Based on Feb figures, private sectors increases are stronger than the previous year's, while increases generally have ranged from 3.2% up to 3.8%. Production in the manufacturing sector continued to be slower than in other parts of the economy.
