The firm goes khaki, but no t-shirts, please; buttoned-down lawyers go casual, but very cautiously

Article Abstract:

More law firms are adopting the casual-dress-on-Fridays rule, with some firms even issuing memos about what is acceptable. According to a survey by OfficeTeam, a staffing service base in Menlo Park, CA, 57% of office managers state that their companies have a casual day each week, while 21% sport casual dress each day. Administrative staff of law firms have a more idiosyncratic sense of style than lawyers, and the firms with a Friday-is-casual rule find it popular with everyone.

Shearman reinvents partner track

Article Abstract:

The law firm Shearman and Sterling announced hefty associate bonuses in 1999, $45,000 for fourth-years and $50,000 for seventh-years in good standing. Part-time or flex-time status will also be available for any reason and such status taken for just two years will not delay a partnership vote. Shearman's most novel maneuver is requiring midlevel's to take one of two career-broadening paths, either three months in a branch office not their own or a month outside the firm either in business school or a soup kitchen.
