Article Abstract:

Turner Entertainment Networks, Europe, Africa and the Middle East Executive Vice-President Andy Bird is becoming a key figure within the Time Warner media group. British-born Bird is also Turner Broadcasting System Europe's co-Managing Director. Bird is very enthusiastic about working for Ted Turner and says he is unlikely to return to working in the UK television industry. Bird sees digital television as an important new venture for television broadcasting. Time Warner has a predicted cash flow of some $1.14 billion for 1st qtr 1997.

Article Abstract:

The new Channel 5 is expected to up andrunning by January 1997. The Invitation to Apply for the licence was launched in November1994, and the deadline for bids was on May 2 1995. In March 1995, the Independent TelevisionCommission revealed that the new channel's coverage is forecast to total 66%. NBC, the MirrorGroup Newspapers, and Yorkshire Tyne Tees Television all withdrew from the race beforedeadline day.

Peter Moore, commissioning editor and head of documentaries at Channel 4, confirms that he is seeking more distinctive documentaries rather than the popular, factual films currently being screened. His aim is to find projects that provide a 'state of the nation' atmosphere. Three other commissioning editors, Paul Hamann, Michael Quattrone and Geoff Metzger, give their views on documentary programming.
