Birmingham or bust for Europe

Article Abstract:

Many observers believe that the European Audiovisual Conference in Birmingham, England, in Apr 1998 will have a significant impact on the future of the European television industry. The conference is taking place at a time of extensive social change, particularly in terms of the widespread availability of audiovisual content. It will focus on the types of regulation required for audiovisual services, the need for intellectual property rights to take account of new media, European financial backing for the television broadcasting sector and the future of employment and work conditions.

Shock of the new?

Article Abstract:

The Channel 4 Television Company Ltd (C4) has an arts budget of 8 million pounds sterling for 1998. C4 Arts Commissioner Janey Walker is planning to show several new arts programs on C4. Some industry observers have criticised the lack of innovative arts programs on C4 which was part of its brief. Walker has introduced the hour long series of arts programs called the 'Art House.' The initial series of 'Art House' had between 400,000-1.8 million viewers. Walker acknowledged C4 programing is not only about audience figures but about introducing new and challenging subjects.

Broadcast canvas

Article Abstract:

The number of specialist arts television channels are unlikely to increase rapidly although some have been fairly successful in Europe and the US. The US Arts and Entertainment network have found it difficult to achieve high audience figures for opera and ballet programs. Some arts stations, such as the UK Performance cable outlet, include a variety of other programs along with a wide range of arts productions. The advertising industry would favour an arts channel in order to have access to the type of audience who enjoy watching the ballet and opera.
