NTL makes 5.2m pounds sterling Parliamentary bid

Article Abstract:

NTL has offered to buy Telewest and Cable & Wireless Communications' stake in Parliamentary Channel for 5.2 million pounds sterling. The bid, which will rival BBC's bid, was offered to secure NTL majority control of Parliamentary broadcasting, according to Steven Wagner, NTL's group managing director of media and marketing services. NTL's bid, along with other bids, will be reviewed by Parbul, a company comprising MPs, the BBC, ITV, BSkyB and the cable firms that provide the station's feed. Parbul is anticipated to release a decision by third week of July 1998.

The tower of Babel

Article Abstract:

Telecommunications company, British Telecommunications PLC, barred by law from competing with cable companies in the UK television industry, is seeking alternative ways to compete in the entertainment market. The company has used a loophole allowing it to provide a service to individual consumers to launch trials of services-on-demand and video-on-demand in two regions. BT is committed to the trials and sees opportunities in education, video conferencing and business sectors.
